Why Should We Fight DSPS - Just Makes Us Who We Are

Well.. hello. My name is Amy and I'm 15 years old. Ever since I can remember I've always had problems with sleeping at "normal socially acceptable times". The best sleeping schedule for me would be to go to sleep at 7 am. and wake up anytime between 4 and 5 pm. Of course this can be a pain in the ass during school time but I guess I just have to cope with it.

My mom is trying to get me to take sleeping pills, but I don't feel that it's quite the right thing to do. DSPS is a part of me and actually I really don't mind. I love staying up every night and that's when I'm most creative and productive. If this is how we were born like then why should we fight it.

The only thing I can think of, that might be a problem, is working early shifts/hours but then well.. just get a night job, or sleep for shorter periods multiple times a day.

It may be difficult for other people to understand DSPS but who cares anyway, everybody's different.

I don't think of this as a disorder rather than just something that makes me who I am.

I am 57. I have probably suffered from this "disorder" for 50 years. I was a chronic nightly sleepwalker as a child. My family now understands and we all work around it.

It is what it is. I guess we are supposed to guard the cave at night, it's in our genes. You can't change it, trust me I've tried melatonin, light boxes. Nothing works.

Sleep when you want.

A Note On Visitor-Submitted Questions:

Publishing sleep stories and questions from our visitors is meant to create a forum for open and proactive dialogue about an extremely important portion of our lives (one that occupies 1/3 of it and affects the other 2/3) that isn't talked about enough. It is not meant to substitute a trip to the doctor or the advice of a specialist. It's good to talk; it is not good to avoid consulting someone who's profession it is to help you with this kind of stuff.

If you are in any way concerned about your sleep health, don't wait for an answer on here, and don't necessarily rely on them. See a sleep specialist in your area as soon as possible.
