Mean Sleep Talking Causing Problems In My Marriage

by Kelly F
(Kent, OH, USA)

Sleep talking is causing problems in my marriage. I do not sleep talk unless spoken to. I am 48 years old now but when I was in my late teens I remember at least one time that I had needed to be up by a certain time and when I woke up late and asked my dad why he had not woke me up, he said that I had cussed him out. I was totally shocked as I would never do that to my dad.

My husband has been furious with me several times because he will wake me up to ask or tell me something and I am nasty and irrational with him. In a recent example, he woke me up to tell me he was going up the street to pick up a pizza for lunch. He says I got really angry and told him I did not want him taking the car anywhere. When I got up a few hours later, he was angry with me. I was crying and telling him I would never stop him in my right mind from getting lunch. This finally prompted me to seek information and help.

I never speak in my sleep unless spoken to and am almost always mean. There was one time that he told me he was going to pick up donuts for breakfast, I agreed this was a good idea apparently and when he returned he asked which donut I wanted, I said I wanted the cream stick, got up on one elbow and ate it. I was told about it later but have no memory of the conversation or even that I ate a donut.

I need to find some sort of help as I can not keep having fights with my husband and waking up to him being furious with me over something that I can not even remember.

Retrograde Amnesia

Thank you for sharing your story. While continuing your research it may be worth reading up about retrograde amnesia, as it relates to losing memories in regards to sleep.

Angry sleep talk ruining relationship NEW
by: Anonymous

Hi
I am 26 and have been a light sleep talker since my early teens, from what my parents tell me.

Over the past 4 years or so due to stress of new employment and a rise in family drama, I have been told I talk pretty much daily now.

On a few occasions my boyfriend , whom I live with, has told me I have been rude and aggressive towards him in the night when he has tried to touch me, telling him to get the f*** off me.

He of course can't help but take this a bit personal and feels rejected every time this happens. It doesn't help matters when all I can say is sorry and I don't remember.

He's told me he's never even heard of such thing happening in someone's sleep and would like to give all acts of intimacy a break for a while. This is ruining us and I don't have a clue what to do...

Has anyone been able to find some help for their similar issues at all. Any advice welcomed.

Kind regards
Nadiya
