Electrical Stimuli As I'm Falling Asleep

by Simsie
(Georgia)

I'm a sleep therapist, so I know all about sleep stages and disorders. I have Obstructive sleep apnea, but no other disorder. My problem is that on occasion, as I'm falling asleep, I'll begin to feel this electrical stimuli surge though my brain. It starts out easy, then intensifies and then it's gone. It will do this repeatedly 4 to 5 times and then is gone. Each time only lasts 2-4 seconds, but it's unnerving.

I've never told this to anyone, because I thought they would think I was crazy. This just started happening several months ago. I'm not sure if I should mention this to my physician or not.

Well you obviously know what's going on with your body if your a therapist. But because it has been more than several months maybe telling a physician would be a good idea. It can't hurt and maybe he'll give you advice on how to get over this for more peaceful nights. He's not going to think your crazy, doctors know many problems when they see it, besides it's not like your a hypochondriac going for many visits about nothing.

Similar experience with electric charge
by: Anastasiya

Interesting actually. Don't want to sound like a crazy person, but....:-) I have been having what I have learned to call Out of Body experiences since I was a child. I am also reading about lucid dreaming here, but don't understand if there is any difference really between OBE and lucid dreaming. My guess is that if you call that experience a lucid dream - you think it to be a dream (made up in your own head), while if you call it an astral projection or OBE you think that that astral world actually exists outside of your body/brain. Maybe I am mistakes, but don't see any other difference. Anyway, that's not my point.

Every time I have an experience it starts out by a feeling/sound in my head like a bomb goes off or something ignites. Sometimes it happens a few times with maybe a second or two in between and I feel that it starts in the middle of my head and spreads outward to a point where it blocks my hearing and perception of the real world. I think it is similar to what the other person mentioned - feeling like an electric charge goes off in your head. Most of the time - once it starts I go into the next stage where I feel vibrations, hear high pitch noice, etc. (basically the text book scenario for OBE) Sometimes, I just get that ignition thing in my head, but it doesn't actually spread into vibrations.

I read a lot about it and have had many very vivid/real experiences, but still don't understand why it happens, what triggers it and how is my brain wired different from my husband's for example so that it happens to me. I did notice that very often it happens around full moon. I never kept track of the dates when I get OBEs, but I started keeping mental notes about it recently and the episods really concentrate around full moon. Maybe I am just trying to establish some pattern to make some sense out of it. I'll keep reading this website, maybe I'll find more answers!

I think this is the same, didn't know what I experienced and didn't talk to anyone about because it scared me. I was half awake and it seemed like an electric charge was moving though house. Then I was fully awake with my eyes closed waiting for it to pass. I didn't know what to think of it, and forgot about but was terrified at moment. Just looking for answers or anyone experiencing similarities.

A Note On Visitor-Submitted Questions:

Publishing sleep stories and questions from our visitors is meant to create a forum for open and proactive dialogue about an extremely important portion of our lives (one that occupies 1/3 of it and affects the other 2/3) that isn't talked about enough. It is not meant to substitute a trip to the doctor or the advice of a specialist. It's good to talk; it is not good to avoid consulting someone who's profession it is to help you with this kind of stuff.

If you are in any way concerned about your sleep health, don't wait for an answer on here, and don't necessarily rely on them. See a sleep specialist in your area as soon as possible.
